Athens, a city between Orient and Occident, East and West, is a city with only two centuries of modern history. Yet today it is one of the European cities where underground culture thrives with the fullest force. Athens’ edge is as political as it is cultural, as religious as it is progressive, and makes the city itself a living, breathing statement of diversity and a melting pot of voice, vision and vice.
This is the Athens sumptuously captured by the artist Tassos Vrettos. The series ‘Backstage’, finds his playground in the dystopic environments looming behind the scenes of S&M parties. His lens frames features performers from the Balkan states, strippers from the US and Russia, LGBT shows and gothic extravaganza; the resulting images are revelatory in their intimacy, privacy and ritual for both photographer, subject and audience.
